Old Chinatown - walk and talk around Pennyfields, Limehouse's Albert Square

Old Chinatown - walk and talk around Pennyfields, Limehouse's Albert Square

113:00-14:00 - Join me at Noodle Street restaurant, near Westferry DLR, for lunch and introductions.

14:00-15:00 - A walk just round the corner through Pennyfields, the square around which Thomas Burke based his stories of old Chinatown. A hive of opium, fights and immorality, it was the Albert Square of its day.

15:00 - Start walking towards the Star of the East pub for a drink and a chat.

Thomas Burke came to London from Eltham as a young man at the time of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and spent much of his life in the East End. Through the interesting characters he met in Limehouse, he compiled a series of stories and poems, including the short story collection Limehouse Nights and the poetry book Quong Lee of Limehouse.

Join Thomas Burke as he takes you around the square, recounting some of his sensational stories and reciting his haunting poems about the reality of life in the slums of old Limehouse.

Cost of tour: £10 per person payable on the day
