Forum Topic: Accutane Inquiry - Seeking Guidance

NickName1234Hey everyone,

I've been dealing with severe acne for years and finally got the green light from my dermatologist to try Accutane. However, I'm in a bit of a pickle. My doctor's clinic doesn't have it available at the moment, and I can't wait any longer to start treatment.

Is there a way to get Accutane without a prescription? I found some websites claiming to sell it without one, but I’m not sure if they’re trustworthy or legal. I'm based in the UK, so could anyone give me advice on how to proceed safely?

Thanks!

HelpfulHerbHello NickName1234,

It's really important to understand that Accutane (or Isotretinoin as it is known generically) should never be purchased or taken without a prescription. In the UK, it's strictly controlled because of its serious side effects and potential interactions with other medications.

Buying from unverified sources can lead you into dangerous territory not only legally but also health-wise. The quality and safety aren't guaranteed when buying online without proper authorization.

If your dermatologist prescribed it, then I’d suggest speaking directly to them about the delay in getting a supply. They might have an alternative or know where you could get it quickly.

NickName1234Thanks for the info, HelpfulHerb. I was hoping there might be some legal loophole, but it sounds like that's not the case. My dermatologist said she’d check with other clinics nearby to see if they had any stock available.

Do you have any tips on how to manage my acne while waiting? The situation is getting pretty unbearable.

HelpfulHerbI understand how frustrating and challenging it can be, NickName1234. While you're waiting for your prescription of Accutane:

  • Gentle Skincare: Use a gentle cleanser twice daily and apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer.
  • Sun Protection: Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day to protect your skin from sun damage, which can worsen acne.
  • Diet and Hydration: Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and stay hydrated. Some studies suggest that dairy products might exacerbate acne for some individuals.
  • Avoid Touching Your Face: Try not to touch your face often, as this can spread bacteria and irritants.
  • Stress Management: High stress levels can worsen skin conditions like acne. Consider meditation or light exercises to manage stress.

These tips won’t replace the treatment you’ve been recommended but might help ease symptoms while waiting for Accutane.

DrDermatologyHi NickName1234,

As a dermatologist, I want to reinforce what HelpfulHerb has said. It’s crucial that you don't purchase any medication online without a prescription, especially something as potent and regulated as Isotretinoin (Accutane).

In the UK, obtaining Accutane legally requires a prescription because of its potential for severe side effects such as liver damage, depression, and serious birth defects if taken by pregnant women. Not to mention, buying it without supervision from an authorized healthcare provider can lead to misuse or abuse.

Your dermatologist’s offer to check with other clinics is a good step forward. You could also ask your GP about the possibility of expedited prescribing or referral processes.

In the meantime, the skincare tips mentioned above are great ways to keep your skin as clear and healthy as possible while you wait. If your condition worsens, reach out to your dermatologist immediately for further advice.

Take care!

NickName1234Thank you both so much for your detailed responses! I really appreciate the advice on managing my acne until I get Accutane. It's reassuring knowing that there are ways to keep things under control in the meantime.

I'll definitely reach out to my dermatologist and GP if needed. And, of course, I won't be purchasing anything without a proper prescription from now on.
