Greece is the word!

They produce some of the most underrated, overlooked wines in the world and, what’s more, they are unique and affordable. Although its’ deep winemaking history stretches back millennia and it has always been at the very core of society.

It is only in the last couple of decades that we have seen a revolution from the cheap plonk and dodgy bottles of Retsina churned out by a few big companies for mass consumption, to the Greek wine industry re-inventing itself and quality is now at an all time high.

Greece has 300 native grape varieties, perhaps not the easiest names to pronounce but, if we can get over this stumbling block, they provide us with a wide spectrum of deliciously, different flavours.

Greece also has 120 regions, 32 appellations and over 1000 wineries and is blessed with wonderfully varied terroir; mountains, valleys, ragged shorelines, and bountiful, beautiful islands. Vineyards remain small and fragmented, mostly worked by hand and many have been farmed organically long before ‘organic’ was even a thing.

Here is the disclaimer – I am half Greek, but believe me Dionysos knew a thing or two!
