Inside London 1: The Garden Museum
This is a rare chance to have a guided tour of the Garden Museum.
The history behind the Garden Museum dates from the medieval era to the present day. It was founded in 1977 in order to rescue the abandoned church of St Mary’s at Lambeth, which was due for demolition. The church is the burial place of John Tradescant (c1570 – 1638), the first great gardener and plant-hunter in British history. Tradescant travelled the world, as did his son bringing new plants to the new Uk and establishing his botanical garden in Lambeth.
The tour will explore his story and celebrate British gardens and gardening through its collection of paintings, tools, ephemera and historic artefacts: a glimpse into the uniquely British love affair with gardens.
We'll meet for coffee beforehand at a venue to be announced and there will be a tour of the area afterwards before an optional lunch.
