George Orwell and religion in the USSR- Interactive Discussion - EXCLUSIVE EVENT
We are meeting downstairs in our own private room - EXCLUSIVE EVENT WITH GUEST SPEAKER for this wonderful inter-active discussion day
10.45 - 11.15 Meet for coffee and social
11.30 - 1330 Discussion and chat about George Orwell, Russia and much more....
In Animal Farm, Orwell introduces the character of Moses the Raven, a tame animal representing the Russian Orthodox Church.
Moses accepts the favours of the tyrannical farmer and then flees the animals' revolution. When the revolution is betrayed, he returns.
In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell presents totalitarianism as a theocratic inquisition and has the main villain, O'Brien, tell the hero, Winston, "We are the priests of power"
Orwell famously got a great deal right about the Soviet Union, but how well did he understand the relationship between church and state?
I would contrast Orwell's conclusions about religion in his major novels and essays with what I have learned about the situation in the USSR during his lifetime.
Host is Roland Elliot Brown, a writer and expert on Russia as well as columnist who has written for the Guardian and Spectator and many more publications.
It promises to be a lively and interesting inter-active discussion
