Relaxed social evening in Chelsea and great music from Salena Jones and Quartet
This event is one which I periodically arrange in some of London`s nicest music rooms.
Venue address, The Pheasantry, 152 King`s Road, Chelsea SW3 4UT
Website information and online booking link -
https://www.pizzaexpresslive.com/whats-on/salena-jones
I have negotiated a special ticket price of £18 (full price is £25) - but which you can only get by making an advance telephone booking to 020 7439 4962 (and quoting “MEETUP).
If you cannot get through to their booking line (which is supposed to be manned daily between 10 am and 6 pm) – contact by email -
The Music Room itself opens from 7 pm - show starts at 8.30 pm. Dining is optional in the same room, and if you plan to eat then I suggest arriving before 7.30 pm
There will be an interval during the show.
Although I have aimed this event for Friday 22nd, it is also available on Saturday 23rd for those who might wish to come on that evening
Once I know numbers attending from advance bookings advised to me by the venue, I will ensure that we are sat together - I will be there myself on both Friday and Saturday evenings.
Please do not RSVP unless you follow through and make an advance booking with the venue (it`s unhelpful and just makes for confusion).
Salena Jones - “Jazz Doyenne who bridges gap with Pop”
live performance extract :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-0iXhBzP9w
Described regularly throughout her career as one of the jazz greats and by others as not altogether a jazz singer, Salena Jones is almost impossible to categorise; the attraction lies in her voice quality pure and simple. She is totally comfortable in diverse styles that she makes her own: blues, jazz standards, commercial pop, latin, big band and orchestral are all in her repertoire
“Salena Jones` cool, relaxed phrasing and delivery is wonderfully free from artifice. At the lower end of the register, her voice is smoky and sensual. Not for her, though, vivacious displays of double-time gymnastics or virtuoso scat choruses; she is a storyteller who allows the lyrics to speak for themselves and although ballads are her strongest suit, she can swing with the very best.”
Time Out - “Stunning British based US singer Salena Jones has a touch of Sarah Vaughan in her technique and a great feel for working intimate jazz venues. She's on fine form, packing a soulful and emotional punch live and is backed here by a highly talented band, Chris Eldred piano, bassist Andrew Robb, drummer Pete Cater and Richard Shepherd on saxophones”.
Over her career Salena Jones has sung with Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, Sarah Vaughan, Maynard Ferguson, Kenny Burrell, Dudley Moore, Roy Budd, Toots Thielemans , Tom Jones, Antonio Carlos Jobim, the BBC Big Band and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
