A Day Trip to Folkestone - An Outdoor Art Trail along The Leas with Lits

Thanks to the town's Triennial Art Festivals some of the artworks remain, becoming part of the UK’s largest open-air art collection. There are now 74 artworks by 46 artists including the internationally renowned Anthony Gormley, Mark Wallinger, Tracey Emin & Yoko Ono.

I have secured the services of an expert and entertaining local guide who will walk and talk us through the The Leas, the unique clifftop promenade on the western side of town, to explore, examine and explain the town’s geography, history and art.

Starting our walk from Folkestone Central station (a mere 52 minutes from London St Pancras) we will mosey our way to ‘The Leas’, stopping en route for a bite of at one of Folkestone’s institutional cafés (no, not just fish&chips – although apparently they’re the best, if you fancy them!).
Perhaps even tea in the afternoon at one of the historic Victorian tearooms.
At the end of our walk we will then be free to linger (more artworks?!), before choosing when to catch our train home.

This year the Creative Coast Project is also unveiling a series of seven artworks in coastal towns around Essex. Kent & Sussex so I am planning to organise a series of cultural day adventures to discover them. Folkestone is one of these towns!

We will also have an important mission to discover the presentation of Chilean artist Pilar Quinteros: ‘Janus’ Fortress’ - a monumental sculptural head sited on a cliff top looking both outwards at Europe and inward to England (contemplating the mixed fortunes of what connects us but also divides us!?!).

* This day out is a ‘stand alone’ event, although it could also be considered in context as the first of my summer series of Creative Coast Awaydays......
