Hello all! I'm really hoping someone here can help. My dog, a golden retriever named Max, has been having some serious itching and skin issues lately. The vet recommended prednisone to help with the inflammation. However, I've heard it's not easily available for purchase in Australia due to its classification as a prescription medication. Can anyone recommend where I could get it safely? Thank you so much!

Hi PuppyLover_123! It's really important to follow your vet’s advice on this. Prednisone is a potent corticosteroid and should only be used under veterinary supervision due to its potential side effects. In Australia, you cannot purchase prednisone over-the-counter; it’s strictly prescription-only.
I would suggest discussing with the vet about getting an official prescription. Once you have that, any licensed pharmacy or veterinarian can dispense the medication for your dog. It's crucial not to buy from unregulated sources as they might provide counterfeit drugs which could harm your pet. Good luck and hope Max feels better soon!

PuppyLover_123, I totally understand the frustration. My dog was on prednisone a few months ago for similar reasons. VetsBestFriend is absolutely right; it’s essential to go through legitimate channels. There are online veterinary pharmacies that may have the medication if your local vet can’t supply it.
Make sure you only use reputable and licensed websites, though! I used one called VetScripts Australia – they required a prescription but delivered within 2 days. Your dog's health is worth taking this extra step to ensure safety.

Hello PuppyLover_123! I'm a vet in Perth and can provide some insights here. Prednisone is indeed strictly controlled as it has significant side effects if not used correctly. The primary concern with buying from non-regulated sources is the lack of quality control and potential for harmful ingredients.
Always consult your vet before starting any medication regimen. They can prescribe the right dosage based on Max's weight, age, and overall health condition. There are also alternative treatments they might suggest to manage his skin issues which could be safer long-term solutions.
If you're having trouble finding a pharmacy that stocks prednisone, some vets in Australia have their own pharmacies or collaborate with specific ones. Ask around locally; your vet is likely familiar with reliable suppliers.
Remember, it's better to play it safe and avoid any risk of getting counterfeit medication which can cause more harm than good.
