Topic: Accutane Price Inquiry & Information - Help Needed!

Posted by: BeautySeekerPosted on: Feb 20th at 10:45 AM

Hi everyone,

I've been researching Accutane as my dermatologist suggested it for severe acne. However, I'm a bit worried about the cost. Can someone please share information on how much this medication typically costs and if there are any cheaper alternatives? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello BeautySeeker,

Thanks for your question. Accutane, which is now known by its generic name isotretinoin due to the brand's discontinuation in the US market a few years back, can indeed vary widely in price depending on several factors like where you live and whether you have insurance coverage.

In general, without insurance, the cost of isotretinoin can range from $100-$400 per month or more. However, with proper insurance, it could be much less - sometimes even just a co-pay that’s around $10-25 monthly.

I recommend discussing this with your dermatologist to see if they have any samples, discounts, or know of patient assistance programs from the drug manufacturers. There are also other treatments such as topical retinoids and antibiotics which might be more affordable depending on your situation.

Hope this helps! If you need further info or have questions about side effects, feel free to ask.

Thanks so much DrSkinnyP for the detailed response. It’s reassuring to hear there might be ways to manage the cost. I’ll definitely talk to my dermatologist about samples or any available assistance programs.

Just out of curiosity, are there any online pharmacies you’d recommend? Or is it generally safer and more reliable to get prescriptions through a local pharmacy?

You're welcome BeautySeeker. I’m glad the information was helpful.

When it comes to purchasing isotretinoin or any medication, it’s generally safer and more reliable to go through a local pharmacy. Online pharmacies can sometimes be risky as not all are legitimate and you want to ensure that your medication is safe and effective.

If you do decide to look into online options, make sure the site has proper accreditation (like VIPPS - Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites). However, I’d still recommend checking with your dermatologist first. They might have access to more local discounts or programs through their network of pharmacies.

Also, don’t forget that isotretinoin requires regular monitoring for potential side effects like changes in blood work and liver function tests, so having a consistent point of care is important.

Thanks again DrSkinnyP! Your advice has been incredibly helpful. I'll definitely stick to local pharmacies and discuss more options with my dermatologist. It's good to know there are ways to manage the cost and that safety is a priority.

If anyone else has experience or tips, please feel free to share!

Hi BeautySeeker,

I went through something similar when I was prescribed isotretinoin. The cost can be high without insurance, but my dermatologist helped me find a patient assistance program that really cut down the costs for me.

Also, make sure to ask about generic versions if you haven’t already; they can often be much cheaper than brand-name drugs even though the effectiveness is just as good.

Good luck with your treatment. Keep us updated on how it goes!
