Saturday coastal historic walk - 7 miles. Folkestone to Hythe with Dee

Saturday coastal historic walk - 7 miles. Folkestone to Hythe with Dee

11.00 - 11.30 Arrive at Folkestone from either St. Pancras/Stratford (fast train) or from Waterloo/ Charing Cross/ London Bridge
If you can arrive anytime between 11.00 - 11.30 we will start off near the station in a cute park cafe ...

11.40 Set off on our walk from Folkestone via Sandgate castle, which was the first of Henry VIII’s ‘Device Forts’ and guarded a beach that stood just 25 miles from the continent making it a likely target in the event of an invasion. Whilst it saw no action during Henry’s reign, it was briefly occupied by the Royalists during the Civil War and was regularly reactivated for coastal defence purposes.

13.45 ish - arrive at Hythe and another fascinating piece of history - the The Royal Military Canal was built between 1804 and 1809 as a defence against invasion by Napoleon – although its guard posts also proved useful in stopping the then-flourishing trade of smuggling.

There are so many places to enjoy a late lunch together before either going on, looking around Hythe, swimming or taking a bus back to Folkestone...

Please email me so I know you're coming and will book a lunch spot for us
