Strawberry Hill House, Twickenham

Strawberry Hill House, Twickenham

You are invited to join Paul & Jane on a visit to Strawberry Hill House. Twickenham the former home of Horace Walpole.. man of letters, great collector of all things beautiful and unusual and youngest son of the first and longest prime minster Sir Robert Walpole.

Horace Walpole purchased Chopped Straw Hall a small cottage in fashionable Twickenham in 1757...over 25 years he built on and on with the help of some of the best designers and architects of the time, creating his own amazing White Gothic Castle...unusual and unique. He entertained royalty, French ambassadors, as well as his close circle of artists, writers and actors... his home become a famous landmark.

it was lovingly restored by the Friends of Strawberry Hill and reopened in 2010. They were passionate about restoring it to its former glory and were awarded a Heritage lottery grant to complete the work Since then it has thrived and people from all over the world visit the house and gardens and many couples choose to marry there amongst the glorious historic feel of stained glass windows, art and the finest example of Georgian Gothic revival architecture.

We are planning a visit on Tuesday November 5th and Jane will guide us around the house with the help of the lovely room stewards, which she was part of until 2016. We will meet at the nearby Alexander Pope, a lovely pub at 11am for coffee before the visit. There is also a café and bathroom facilities in the grounds of the house.

Please visit the website strawberryhillhouse.org.uk...for more information and ticket prices...There will also be a £5 meet up charge for the visit.

A ticket will be required from the website for entrance to the house. There are several concessions. I have been informed that tickets can be bought at the house as well.
