Start the week with Di - Lunch and walk to Whitechapel Gallery

12:00 meet for lunch and chat before setting off.

1pmish we walk along towards Whitechapel High Street passing The Genesis Cinema one of London’s few remaining independent cinemas, a parade of London plane trees, the bust of William Booth of the Salvation Army and statue of his wife and the chance to spot other statues and monuments on the way. We will also pass the Trinity Green Almshouses built in 1695 for Masters and Commanders of Ships or there Widows, which explains the model galleons.

Past the Blind Beggar pub, best known for Ronnie Kray’s 1966 shooting of rival gangster George Cornell and on to the Royal London Hospital built in the 1750s to treat the sick “merchant seamen and manufacturing classes” Edith Cavell, pioneer nurse and World War I heroine, worked here.

The walk will end at the Whitechapel Gallery next to Aldgate East underground station where we can have a final cuppa and there will be a chance to look around the gallery before returning home.

There will be a £5 charge for the day, please change your rsvp if you find you are unable to attend.
