Historic City Villages 3: Stepney

Historic City Villages 3: Stepney

Once a popular area for seafaring types and even wealthy merchants, in time became an overcrowded slum as the poor flooded in for work in the docks and round about.

It's the home to one of London's oldest churches, the site of some of the city's oldest social housing, where the peasants revolted and met the king and where one man stood firm against the march of the Selfridges of the East End. All this plus where the Salvation Army started plus the 17th century almshouses built for 'decayed' sailors.

Optional lunch to follow.
