Tim’s history of London, walk 7, London’s docks in early C19

Happy new year everyone
This is the seventh walk of the 12 charting London’s history over the last 2000 years. We’ve dealt with the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire and the end of the eighteenth century saw the re-emergence of London as the greatest city in Europe and perhaps the world, dominating international trade and the high seas. It was about to enter an era of unprecedented growth, its population growing by 500% during the next 100 years. At the heart of this growth were the great London docks built in the early years of the nineteenth century.
On this walk we will explore the hamlet of Wapping in the heart of the London docks.
It will take us through some of the most atmospheric and historic parts of the London docklands.

We meet at 10.30 in the coffee bar of the Citizen M hotel opposite the exit of Tower Hill tube station.

We start walking at 11 , past the Tower, St Katherine’s dock and then through what remains of the great London docks.

Along the way we will see the remains of the docks, a lost tunnel and a pirate's gibbet. The cast of characters includes Oswald Mosley, Brunel, JMW Turner, Judge Jeffries, Captain Kidd and Graham Norton.

We will end up in time for lunch in a historic Thames side pub with great river views.
