Tim's history of London walk 9, Victorian London
We meet at the Pret just south of South Kensington station at 10.30 for a drink and a chat before leaving for a two hour walk, ending in a private room in a welcoming pub.
This is the 9th of 12 walks investigating London’s long history.
London in the middle of the nineteenth century was the greatest city the world had ever seen. It was the capital of the largest empire on which the sun never set. Wealth was pouring in to the city from trade or manufacturing.
The Victorians embarked on a massive rebuilding and expansion of London often following the new railways that brought suburbia to the city. On this walk we will look at some of the great monuments the Victorians left us. They will tell us about the concerns, passions, enormous strengths and significant weaknesses of these remarkable people.
