THE SOUL OF LANZAROTE: volcanoes, vineyards & art - with Lits
Winter sun, spectacular scenery, whitewashed architecture, Manrique masterpieces, volcanic vineyards, wonderful wine, artisan cheese, sea salt and Canarian cuisine.
Away from the tourist hotspots this tour is designed to discover the true essence of this unique island where art and nature exist in harmony, side by side along with the sunshine.
Our base will be a beach-side hotel located in the island's capital, Arrecife, from where we will explore Lanzarote through the lens of its most influential son, César Manrique—artist, architect, environmentalist and the visionary responsible for preserving much of this island's unique character.
Over five leisurely days we will discover the dramatic volcanic landscapes that shape the island, visit Manrique's most celebrated creations, wander through historic villages, explore vineyards unlike any other in the world, savour traditional (& modern!) Canarian cuisine and sip on the wonderful wines it produces.
This is not your normal package holiday!
Please read our itinerary brief below:
Day 1 - Arrival & Intro to Arrecife
Depart LGW 07.35 - arrive Arrecife midday
After checking into our hotel we will enjoy a private guided tour through the historic heart of the island’s capital city.
Gathering again in the evening for our welcome dinner together beside the picturesque Charco de San Ginés lagoon.
Day 2 – César Manrique's Masterpieces
Today we discover the life and legacy of César Manrique.
Beginning at his remarkable former home in Tahiche, built within volcanic lava bubbles, before travelling north through some of the island's most dramatic scenery.
In Haría, the Valley of a Thousand Palms, we visit Manrique's final home before continuing to the spectacular Mirador del Río, where breathtaking views stretch across the Atlantic to the neighbouring island of La Graciosa.
Following a leisurely seafood lunch in the fishing village of Arrieta, we will explore two more of Manrique's most celebrated creations: the magical volcanic caverns of Jameos del Agua and the striking Jardín de Cactus (Cactus Garden).
Day 3 – Volcanoes, Salt & Wine
This morning we take a scenic drive through the extraordinary volcanic landscapes of Timanfaya National Park, where vast lava fields and dramatic geological formations reveal the island's fiery origins before making a brief stop at the historic salt-pans of Janubio.
Our journey will continue into La Geria, one of the world's most unusual wine regions, where vines flourish in hollows hewn out of black volcanic ash. Here we will enjoy a memorable vineyard lunch accompanied by local wines before visiting Lanzarote's oldest winery, to learn more about the island's unique winemaking traditions.
Day 4 – Art, Heritage & Local Traditions
Today we will explore the cultural heart of Lanzarote, beginning at the International Museum of Contemporary Art, housed within the historic San José Castle overlooking Arrecife harbour. From there we travel to Teguise, the island's former capital, where cobbled streets, elegant mansions and quiet squares invite leisurely exploration.
After lunch in one of Teguise's charming historic buildings, we will visit a local artisan cheesemaker to discover another important aspect of Lanzarote's culinary heritage. Concluding our day at LagOmar, a fascinating architectural masterpiece carved into volcanic rock surrounded by myth, imagination and extraordinary design.
Day 5 – Lanzarote at Leisure
Today offers the opportunity to enjoy Lanzarote at your own pace. You may choose to relax in the town, sunbathe(!), browse the local shops (Christmas?!) or simply enjoy a leisurely lunch beside the lagoon. An optional excursion will also be on offer, depending on opportunities and interests.
We will come together once more in the evening to enjoy a unique dining experience of creative Canarian cuisine overlooking the beautiful bay of Arrecife.
