Forum: Propecia 100mg - Is it the Right Choice for Me?

Post by: BaldingButBearingUp

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing my hairline receding pretty fast and I'm not really happy about it. My dermatologist suggested trying out Propecia (Finasteride) to see if it can help me regain some of what I've lost. I’m considering starting with the 1 mg dosage but am a bit unsure if this is the best course of action.

Has anyone else tried Propecia? How did you decide on which dose to start with, and how effective has it been for you? Any side effects or things to watch out for would be great to know too.

Thanks!

Hi BaldingButBearingUp,

I’ve actually been using Propecia (Finasteride) 1 mg for about three years now. It’s helped me stabilize my hair loss and even grow back some of the thinner areas on top. I started with the 1 mg dose and found it to be effective without any significant side effects. My dermatologist recommended starting low, so that's what I did.

In terms of effectiveness, everyone is different, but for most men, 1 mg works well. There are higher doses available in some countries, but they’re not typically necessary unless your doctor specifically prescribes them.

Hi BaldingButBearingUp,

I'm a board-certified dermatologist and I often see patients who are considering Propecia (Finasteride). It’s important to understand that while 1 mg is the standard dose approved for hair loss, it's crucial to start with this amount unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.

Starting at 1 mg allows you to monitor any potential side effects. Common ones include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculation disorders; however, these are relatively rare and tend to resolve when discontinuing the medication. Finasteride works by blocking DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is a hormone responsible for hair loss in many men.

It's important to have realistic expectations with Propecia. While it can stop further hair loss and potentially regrow some lost hair, results take time—often six months or longer before you might notice significant changes.

Make sure you discuss your overall health status with your doctor before starting any new medication. This includes checking for contraindications such as pre-existing sexual health issues or potential drug interactions.

Thanks so much, HairRestorer91 and DocWithThePlan! It's really helpful to hear from someone who’s actually used the product and a professional in the field. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind as I talk with my dermatologist about starting on Propecia.

I’m just a bit nervous about the potential side effects, but it sounds like they're not too common. Does anyone else have any personal experiences or tips for managing these possible issues if they arise?

Absolutely, BaldingButBearingUp!

If you do experience side effects while taking Propecia (Finasteride), the first step is to reach out to your doctor. They can help you manage symptoms or adjust your treatment plan as needed.

For example, if you notice a decrease in libido, it might be worth discussing whether lifestyle changes like improving sleep quality and reducing stress could help mitigate these effects. In some cases, adjusting the dosage under medical supervision might also be an option.

It's important to remember that side effects are not universal and many men tolerate Propecia well without any adverse reactions. Regular follow-ups with your dermatologist can ensure you're on track and address any concerns promptly.

Just wanted to add my two cents—when I first started taking Propecia, I did experience a bit of initial hair shedding known as "telogen effluvium." This is normal and usually settles down within the first few months. Don't be alarmed if you see more shedding at the start; it often indicates that the medication is working to stabilize your hair.

If side effects do occur, they’re generally manageable. Just make sure to communicate openly with your doctor about any changes you notice so adjustments can be made as needed.

Hope this helps and good luck on your journey!

Thank you both for all the helpful information! It’s reassuring knowing I’m not alone in considering Propecia, and having a clearer idea of what to expect will definitely help with my decision-making process. I’ll make sure to keep these points in mind during my next appointment.

Appreciate the support!
