12 MILE GRADE 2 WALK THROUGH ANCIENT WOODS AND COUNTRY PARKS, REACHABLE BY TUBE.

DESCRIPTION

“T’was the Saturday before Christmas,
And all through the woods,
The Not Grumpies were hiking,
As only they could.”

We will walk through nature reserves and a 55 hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest, via:

● Stanmore Country Park

● Stanmore Common

● Harrow Weald Common

● Bentley Priory Open Space

We will see a variety of wildlife including deer and if the rumours are true, possibly even wild boar!

Arriving by Tube? It might be a great idea BEFORE you go through the ticket barriers, to visit the loos on Platform 1. If you're already on the other side of the barrier, speak to the station staff- attempting to go in and out of the platform area will glitch your Oyster or payment card.

If you're traveling by car, there is parking at the station. It will be cheaper if you parked at the LIDL nearby- tell their car park attendant you're with Hugh Breidenbach and will need to park all day.

We’ll pass by the Grim’s Dyke Hotel which has been used in many films and TV series because of its period features, and also Bentley Priory, formerly a medieval priory and the headquarters of RAF Fighter Command during WW2.

We’ll finish at a pub or restaurant close to Stanmore tube station ?

Hike distance: 12 miles/19 km (about 5/5.5 hours of actual walking)
Hike grade: 2/10 (i.e. It's flat)
Hike speed: approx. 2.5/3mph over varied terrain

MEETING AT

Stanmore Underground Station, at the North West end of the Jubilee Line.

Meeting outside the station entrance. Either go straight up the stairs, or turn immediately right after the ticket barriers and go up a much gentler slope to street level. Muster at 9.45am for a departure at 10am.
